Frequently Asked Questions
What is your therapeutic background and approach?
I hold a higher certificate in psychodynamic psychotherapy from Birkbeck University and a master’s degree in systems-psychodynamic organizational consultancy from the Tavistock and Portman Institute of Human Relations. My therapeutic approach is rooted in psychodynamic psychotherapy, which involves uncovering unconscious meanings and motivations to address problematic behaviors, feelings, and thoughts.
How does your therapy process work, and what can clients expect?
In therapy, I emphasize a close working partnership between the therapist and the client. Clients can expect to explore their interactions within the therapeutic relationship to gain insights into themselves. This process is designed to help clients better understand and address the issues they are facing.
Can you explain the difference between psychodynamic therapy and other therapeutic approaches?
Psychodynamic therapy, which originated with Sigmund Freud but has evolved over time, focuses on uncovering unconscious motivations and meanings. Unlike some other therapies, it places a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship and the client’s interactions within it. This approach can be especially beneficial for those looking for deep self-exploration and insight.
How long does psychodynamic therapy typically take to show results, and is it suitable for everyone?
The duration of psychodynamic therapy varies from person to person and depends on individual goals and challenges. While some may experience significant breakthroughs in a few months, others may choose to continue therapy over a more extended period for continued personal growth. As for suitability, psychodynamic therapy can benefit many individuals seeking a deep understanding of themselves and their emotions.
What's your favorite aspect of practicing psychodynamic therapy, and have you ever had a "Eureka" moment during a session?
One of the most rewarding aspects of practicing psychodynamic therapy is witnessing clients’ personal growth and self-discovery. As for “Eureka” moments, they happen more often than you’d think! I once had a client realize that their recurring dreams about flying represented their desire for freedom and escape. It’s these moments of insight that make therapy truly fascinating and enriching—for both clients and therapists.
